Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

“Trust your unconscious. It knows more than you do.”

Milton H Erickson

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses the power of suggestion to encourage positive change.

Whilst your conscious mind is in charge of thinking, analysing and logic, your subconscious mind is where your memories, beliefs, habits and behaviours are stored.

You can get stuck in bad habits or behaviours because your subconscious mind creates a programme of future responses, based on your past experiences. For example, if you experienced a minor car crash as a child, your subconscious mind holds the way that made you feel and can repeat and even magnify this feeling, every time you get into a car.

Hypnotherapy can help to create new, more helpful patterns and programmes of thought.

How does it work?

When working with you, I will use relaxation techniques to help you reach a state where the conscious part of your mind is relaxed and your subconscious part is more open to suggestion. I will then talk gently to your subconscious to help encourage the change you’re looking for.

The approach I take will depend entirely on you, your personal situation and your needs.

I often use affirmations as a powerful tool to boost your confidence and to calm nerves and anxiety:

“Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.”

Émile Coué

Most people describe being in hypnosis as feeling incredibly relaxed, but also acutely aware.

Hypnotherapy is incredibly safe, you are in complete control and can only enter hypnosis if you want to. You can stop it at any time and I cannot make you do anything that you do not want to do.

You can have hypnotherapy sessions face to face or over Google Meet. Many of my clients prefer this as they can relax more easily in their own homes.

Hypnotherapy for Children

Children tend to learn hypnosis more easily than adults because as part of their natural development they are imagining, fantasising and pretending many times a day, on a daily basis. You may have noticed how easily entranced children become by stories, TV, tablets or mobile phones.

During hypnosis, adults commonly remain quite still and keep their eyes closed. Teenagers and more mature children may also be able to do this. Younger children, however, are less likely to close their eyes and sit still, and so may play, create or do repetitive tasks whilst listening to stories that appeal to their imagination and love of fantasy.

Hypnotherapy for children draws upon their imagination to nurture characteristics such as self-esteem and confidence. It provides a forum to explore their issues, seeing them from a new perspective. It provides children with resilience and coping strategies and allows them to see the issues that they have from a new perspective.  In short, I provide them with the storyline of their own adventure, which you can then practice with them at home.

Sessions will involve time with you, the parent or carer, at the beginning of each session, to feed back on how their week has been.  At the end of each session I will also spend time with you in order to explain what we have been doing and what you can do at home to support the work the child is doing.

Hypnotherapy for children can be used to treat a range of issues such as:

  • bedwetting (enuresis)
  • family issues, including parental divorce and separation
  • picky eating
  • disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • phobias
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • grief
  • addictions, such as to their mobile phone or devices
  • exam nerves
  • confidence
  • traumas
  • low self-esteem
  • anger issues
